Mildmay Hospital Uganda (MHUg) is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented individual to join our dynamic team in the position indicated below.
JOB TITLE: OPTOMETRIST
Reporting to: Medical Director/Head of Adult Medical Services
Job Summary: The position holder is responsible for providing comprehensive eye care services, including vision assessment, diagnosis of refractive errors, management of common eye conditions, prescription of corrective lenses, and referral of complex cases to ophthalmologists. The role supports the hospital’s commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care, the prevention of vision impairment, and the integration of eye health into primary health services.
Expected Key Result Areas:
- Clinical Eye Care Delivery: Provide thorough eye assessments, diagnose common eye conditions, prescribe corrective lenses, and ensure appropriate referrals for complex cases.
- Diagnostic Testing: Perform and accurately interpret key ophthalmic diagnostic procedures to support effective clinical decision‑making.
- Patient Education: Deliver clear patient education on eye health, disease prevention, proper use of lenses, and lifestyle factors influencing vision.
- Preventive Eye Health Services: Support early detection of visual impairment through hospital and community eye screening initiatives.
- Optical Services Support: Collaborate with the optical unit to verify prescriptions, guide lens/frame choices, and uphold quality standards for optical products.
- Clinical Documentation: Maintain accurate, complete patient records and generate reports that support audits and quality improvement.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with ophthalmologists and other clinical teams to ensure integrated care, especially for patients with chronic diseases.
- Quality and Compliance: Participate in quality improvement activities and ensure adherence to clinical protocols and national eye‑care guidelines.
- Equipment and Facility Management: Ensure proper use and routine care of ophthalmic equipment, reporting faults promptly to maintain uninterrupted service delivery.
Qualification & Experience:
- Diploma in Optometry or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration and Licence with the Allied Health Professionals’ Council
- Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in optometry practice with demonstrable clinical competences in Advanced refraction skills, Diagnosis of common ocular conditions, and use of ophthalmic diagnostic equipment
